Sorry, You're Not on the List
Sigmund Young and Holly Hixon enjoy their 15 minutes at the Warhol party. (Photo by Amy Argetsinger)
One in an occasional series of dispatches from parties you should have crashed.
Event: 1960s-esque Andy Warhol "Factory Party," Wednesday night.
Site: Renaissance M Street Hotel.
Cause: The nice folks from Martini & Rossi and Capitol File lobbying us to drink their vermouth, read their magazine.
Draw: Display of vintage 1950s M&R ads drawn by Warhol, before he was Warhol.
Real draw: Once upon a time, a shrewd urban party-hopper could drink and nosh free almost any night, thanks to the largess of swank hotels, luxury-goods producers and glossy magazines. Now these industries -- like so, so many -- are in big trouble, so ..... get your drink on before it all vanishes.
Crowd: Random pretty people dressed gamely mod-ishly -- ascots, bangs, minis, tights.
Bar: Open! Very sweet vermouth cocktails.
Anachronistic eye candy: Cocktail waitresses dressed as Marilyn Monroe (well, Warhol did paint her) and a hippie chick in headband and go-go boots (did anyone not on "Laugh-In" ever wear that combo?).
Gift bag: None. Warhol-style faux-silkscreen glamour pics for guests to remember the night.
