Kournikova, a humanitarian at heart

By: Patrick Gavin

The former pro tennis player is active in the humanitarian aid community, doing work in Haiti and Russia.

In a town filled with politicos, this month's Capitol File cover girl — former pro tennis player and model Anna Kournikova — is anything but a wonk. Yet Kournikova isn’t totally removed from our world of nonprofits and charities: She’s active in the humanitarian aid community, doing work in Haiti and Russia, her birth country.

On Wednesday, Kournikova will head to D.C. for a party at Oya celebrating her magazine cover.

The first thing Kournikova wanted to know about her upcoming visit?

"How's the weather?"

"Good!" POLITICO replied. "But how good? What's the temperature?" she pressed. Once Kournikova, who talked to us from Miami, was assured that D.C. would be sufficiently temperate, we were able to pick her brain on several topics.

On President Obama's seeming to prefer basketball to her cherished sport of tennis: "That's great! As long as our president emphasizes sports and plays any kind of sport — whether it's soccer or it's basketball — that's great. Obviously, it would be amazing if it were tennis, but whatever sport it is ..."

Kournikova Opens Up to Capitol File

By Matt Dornic

The Spring issue of Capitol File hit newsstands today, boasting a photo spread and cover-story about tennis player Anna Kournikova who has been focusing her attention on humanitarian efforts and providing relief to Haiti:

Kournikova has been quietly flying to Haiti and Russia to work with those in need. She's talked with child slaves about their plight; she's handed out condoms; she's gotten AIDS tests to set an example for sex workers who often fear testing and the stigma associated with it and the disease itself.

On her recent involvement with relief efforts in Haiti Kournikova tells Capitol File magazine that "What I saw in Haiti was just ridiculous." "When I spent summers in the [Russian] country-side with my great-grandmother, running around barefoot, at least we had water, we had fields, we could grow food and you weren't eating mud cookies."

"If you read a book, you get all the facts and statistics, but if you see [suffering and disease] with your own eyes, it really changes your whole understanding," says Kournikova.

Last week, Acura teamed up with Capitol File magazine to present their latest model, the 2010 Acura ZDX four-door sports coupe, at Longview Gallery. The event was the sixth stop of a seven-city tour featuring the vehicle and works of renowned photographer Erik Madigan Heck, editor in chief and creative director of Nomenus Quarterly.

The exhibition showcased Heck's photography amongst high concept art, sculptures, and video installations as a means of communicating the vision behind the ZDX.
