Beckinsale as Ink-Stained Wretch

In the subterranean Naval Heritage Center on Thursday night, a cocktail party crowd swilled champagne, nibbled on beef short ribs and jostled for a chance to chat up Kate Beckinsale.

The 35-year-old actress (silky hair, drapey gray dress, towering platform sandals) was in town to promote "Nothing but the Truth," Hollywood's very loose take on the saga of former New York Times reporter Judith Miller, who did jail time for not revealing a source. Capitol File hosted a screening of the film (Beckinsale leads as a fictional journalist) followed by a quick meet-and-greet with the star.

We wondered if playing a jailed journo had changed Beckinsale's opinion of reporters. (In October 2007, the Brit told our colleague Bill Booth, "I've always seen you people as the enemy" though she admitted that she mostly meant movie critics.)

"My experience is with celebrity journalism, which is a different arm," Beckinsale told us. "But there are more similarities between our professions than I realized."
