It wasn't politics as usual in D.C. as stars swooped in for the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. A look at what was seen and heard:

The Unusuals star Amber Tamblyn, a guest of USA TODAY, introduced her boyfriend, actor David Cross, as "my bodyguard."

•Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes didn't appear in the ballroom until most guests had already been seated. Cruise stopped to say hello to people on the way to his table, while his wife, clad in a white pantsuit, stood and waited quietly by his side.

•Syndicated talk-show host Glenn Beck paused in the hotel lobby to show off his cummerbund, emblazoned with a skull and crossbones. "Snazzy, isn't it?"

Trudie Styler was about to pose for fan photos upon leaving the dinner, but amid the mobs of people, husband Sting hadn't noticed and kept walking. She smiled, graciously apologized and said, "I guess we've got to get going!"

Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick walked a block from the Washington Hilton to his waiting car, catching a smoke on the way and saying he was sending texts during the dinner to co-star Chace Crawford, who was seated at another table.

•At Capitol File Magazine's after-party at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Owen Wilson almost went unnoticed while chatting in a corner of the busy main room.

Upstairs, Christian Slater kept away from the hoi polloi in a roped-off area that drew little foot traffic. Eva Longoria Parker came early; actor/rapper Chris "Ludacris" Bridges showed up later with an entourage.
