Kournikova, a humanitarian at heart

By: Patrick Gavin

The former pro tennis player is active in the humanitarian aid community, doing work in Haiti and Russia.

In a town filled with politicos, this month's Capitol File cover girl — former pro tennis player and model Anna Kournikova — is anything but a wonk. Yet Kournikova isn’t totally removed from our world of nonprofits and charities: She’s active in the humanitarian aid community, doing work in Haiti and Russia, her birth country.

On Wednesday, Kournikova will head to D.C. for a party at Oya celebrating her magazine cover.

The first thing Kournikova wanted to know about her upcoming visit?

"How's the weather?"

"Good!" POLITICO replied. "But how good? What's the temperature?" she pressed. Once Kournikova, who talked to us from Miami, was assured that D.C. would be sufficiently temperate, we were able to pick her brain on several topics.

On President Obama's seeming to prefer basketball to her cherished sport of tennis: "That's great! As long as our president emphasizes sports and plays any kind of sport — whether it's soccer or it's basketball — that's great. Obviously, it would be amazing if it were tennis, but whatever sport it is ..."

Kournikova Opens Up to Capitol File

By Matt Dornic

The Spring issue of Capitol File hit newsstands today, boasting a photo spread and cover-story about tennis player Anna Kournikova who has been focusing her attention on humanitarian efforts and providing relief to Haiti:

Kournikova has been quietly flying to Haiti and Russia to work with those in need. She's talked with child slaves about their plight; she's handed out condoms; she's gotten AIDS tests to set an example for sex workers who often fear testing and the stigma associated with it and the disease itself.

On her recent involvement with relief efforts in Haiti Kournikova tells Capitol File magazine that "What I saw in Haiti was just ridiculous." "When I spent summers in the [Russian] country-side with my great-grandmother, running around barefoot, at least we had water, we had fields, we could grow food and you weren't eating mud cookies."

"If you read a book, you get all the facts and statistics, but if you see [suffering and disease] with your own eyes, it really changes your whole understanding," says Kournikova.

Kournikova's world perspective

By Elliott Harris

Where in the world is Anna Kournikova?

Good question. The answer: It depends. Possibly on the day of the week, possibly on what in the world is happening.

The former tennis star and perpetual Quick Hits favorite has been busy with travels to to Haiti and her native Russia.

She recently has been involved with relief efforts in Haiti.

In the March issue of Capitol File, she said, ''What I saw in Haiti was just ridiculous. When I spent summers in the [Russian] countryside with my great-grandmother, running around barefoot, at least we had water, we had fields, we could grow food and you weren't eating mud cookies.''

''In one Haitian village, the community was so poor that the children ate cookies made of mud. Mud, a little lard and little sugar; just to fill their bellies,” Marshall Towell, director of communications for PSI (formerly Population Services International) told the magazine of Kournikova's time in Haiti. ''Kournikova walked right up to the woman selling them [mud cookies]''

''Marshall wouldn't let me buy a mud cookie,'' Kournikova said. ''I asked him for some Haitian money, and he was like, 'Nope.' But if other eat them, what can happen to me?''

Seeing definitely was believing the plight in Haiti.

''If you read a book,'' she said, ''you get all the facts and statistics, but if you see [suffering and disease] with your own eyes, it really changes your whole understanding.''

Anna Kournikova: Capitol File Foxy

Celebrating her cover spot, Anna Kournikova was spotted at the Capitol File Magazine party in Washington DC last night (April 7).

The Russian tennis babe looked lovely as she posed for the paparazzi outside Oya Restaurant, sporting a simple-yet-sexy black dress and matching heels.

During a recent interview, Anna explained how much she enjoyed her work with the United Service Orgainzations.

"That was an incredible experience going to Iraq and Afghanistan, showing them how much we care and how much we appreciate them. ... I was visiting their families and their kids and all the schools and talking to the kids about how it is to grow up outside of their own country. ... I came to America at 9 years old, so I know how hard it is to move around and travel all the time."

Capitol File to Keep the Party Going After Correspondents' Dinner

Washington D.C. isn't all about politics -- they know how to party. Once again, thanks to Niche Media's Capitol File magazine's Jason Binn, there will be a can't-be-missed after party for the White House Correspondents Association Dinner that nobody will forget.

On May 1, after the night's comedic antics, guests like John Cusack, Oscar-nominee Jeremy Renner and Bill Maher will kick back and enjoy the big shindig at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel, presented by Bing and hosted by Binn along with Food Network star Bobby Flay and CNN's Wolf Blitzer. Because if there's anyone we'd love to throw back some drinks with, it's a dude named Wolf Blitzer.

Party at OYA

The tennis bombshell donned a sexy but classy Dolce & Gabbana and her own Louboutins peep-toe platforms at the party that was all about Anna. Capitol File magazine threw the swanky affair at OYA to celebrate the one face turning the heat up on the cover of this month’s issue.

Anna told me she’ll be back in DC a lot this summer not only to play some tennis (July 21st) but also to do hands on charity work with PSI and the USO. Oh, and what about that GIGANTIC yellow diamond she’s been sporting’ on her ring finger for more than a year. I asked her what the story was? With a wide grin and giggle she playfully replied “what… there is no story!”
